How to Find an AirTag Using Apple’s Find My App

Losing your keys, wallet, backpack, or another important item can be frustrating. If you have attached an Apple AirTag to it, you can use Apple’s Find My app to check where it was last detected and get directions to its location.

AirTag works with Apple’s Find My network, which can help locate the tag even when it is not close enough to your iPhone for a direct Bluetooth connection. The exact features available can depend on your iPhone model and the AirTag’s current connection.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to locate an AirTag, use directions and sound alerts, and troubleshoot common problems.

How to Find Your AirTag in Find My

Before searching for an AirTag, make sure it has already been set up and associated with your Apple Account.

Once that is done, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select the Items tab.
  3. Choose the AirTag you want to find.
  4. Check its location on the map.
  5. If the AirTag is nearby, select the available finding option and follow the instructions shown on the screen.

On compatible iPhone models, Precision Finding can provide more detailed guidance when you are close to the AirTag. It can show information such as the approximate distance and direction, helping you move toward the tag.

If your device does not support Precision Finding, you can still use the location shown in Find My and follow the available map directions.

Play a Sound When the AirTag Is Nearby

Sometimes the map shows that your AirTag is close, but finding the actual item can still be difficult. It could be under a sofa, inside a bag, or somewhere else nearby.

In this situation, you can use the sound feature:

  1. Open Find My.
  2. Go to Items.
  3. Select your AirTag.
  4. Choose Play Sound.
  5. Listen for the sound and use it to help locate the item.

This can be particularly useful when the AirTag is somewhere within hearing distance but hidden from view.

Once you have found your item, you can close the finding screen and stop using the directions.

Get Directions to Your AirTag

If the AirTag is not nearby, you can use the location information in Find My to help determine where to search.

Open Find My, select Items, and choose the relevant AirTag. If a location is available, you can select the directions option to open the location in Maps.

From there, you can choose a suitable route and follow the navigation instructions.

Keep in mind that the location displayed may represent the AirTag’s most recently detected position rather than its exact current position. If the tag has not connected to the Find My network recently, the information may be older.

Turn On “Notify When Found”

If your AirTag is currently unavailable, Find My can notify you when it is detected again.

To enable the notification:

  1. Open Find My.
  2. Select Items.
  3. Tap the AirTag you are looking for.
  4. Find the notification options.
  5. Turn on Notify When Found, if the option is available.

After this feature is enabled, you can receive an alert when Find My gets a new location for the AirTag.

This can be useful if you are unable to search for the item immediately.

Check the Last Known Location

Find My may show the last location where your AirTag was detected. This information can give you a starting point when searching for a missing item.

Look at both the location and the time associated with it. If the information is not recent, avoid assuming that the AirTag is still at exactly the same place.

The AirTag needs to be detected by a compatible Apple device or otherwise connected to the Find My network for its location information to be updated.

What to Do If Your AirTag Does Not Appear

If your AirTag is missing from the Find My app or its location is not updating, there are a few things worth checking.

1. Make Sure You Are Using the Correct Apple Account

An AirTag is associated with the Apple Account used during setup. If you are signed in to a different account, you may not see the AirTag in your list of items.

On your iPhone or iPad:

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap your name at the top.
  • Check which Apple Account is currently signed in.
  • Open Find My and check your items again.

If you recently changed accounts or are using another device, make sure you are signed in with the account that was used to set up the AirTag.

2. Check Location Services

Location-related settings can affect how Find My works.

To check Location Services:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Select Location Services.
  4. Make sure Location Services is enabled.
  5. Check the relevant Find My settings.

The exact options can vary depending on your iOS or iPadOS version, so the menus may look slightly different.

3. Check the AirTag Battery

AirTag uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. If the battery is depleted, the AirTag may stop providing updated location information.

If Find My indicates that the battery needs attention, replace it with a compatible CR2032 battery according to Apple’s instructions.

After replacing the battery, give the AirTag some time to reconnect and then check Find My again.

Why Your AirTag Location May Not Be Real-Time

One important thing to understand is that an AirTag does not work like a GPS tracker with its own cellular connection.

Its location can be updated through Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network. When the AirTag is away from your iPhone, nearby Apple devices can help detect it and securely relay its approximate location to the Find My network.

Because of this, there may be a delay between the AirTag’s actual location and the location shown in the app.

If the AirTag has not been detected recently, Find My may only display its last known location.

Final Thoughts

Apple’s Find My app makes it much easier to search for items attached to an AirTag. You can check the available location information, use Precision Finding on compatible iPhones, play a sound when the tag is nearby, or use Maps when you need directions.

If the AirTag is not updating, start by checking your Apple Account, location settings, and battery. Also remember that the location shown in Find My may sometimes be the last detected position rather than a live location.

With the right settings in place, an AirTag can be a useful way to keep track of everyday belongings.
